Inside CULTA’s Cultivation Facility: A Look at Our Roots & Progress

At CULTA, we take pride in our commitment to quality, innovation, and sustainability. When you choose a CULTA product, you’re not just getting your hands on premium cannabis—you’re getting a high-quality product that’s backed up not only by the very best ingredients, but by cutting-edge technology and a team of experts driven by passion and dedication. From the early days of our journey through the present day, our mission has remained the same: to produce the very best cannabis in the state of Maryland.

2017: The Early Days

Not only are we one of the largest cannabis distributors in the state, but we’re also one of the oldest. In fact, in 2017, CULTA was one of the first companies to obtain a license for medical cannabis cultivation in Maryland! Since then, our facilities have grown, we’ve expanded our head count, and we’ve harvested some of the very best cannabis, but we haven’t forgotten our roots. We’ll always be committed to sustainable growing practices and a meticulous attention to detail, no matter how much our footprint grows.

2020: Expanding Our Outdoor Cultivation

We’re also one of the first cultivators in the state to put a heavy focus on outdoor, sun-grown cannabis. After the success of our historic 2019 harvest, we invested heavily in automation technology and state-of-the-art equipment to continue growing our outdoor-grown product offering. In 2020, we expanded our commercial cannabis facility and tripled the acreage used for cultivation. Currently, our outdoor farm sits on three acres and is one of the largest outdoor cultivation facilities east of the Mississippi.

Our Cambridge farm isn’t just home to over 13,000 cannabis plants—it’s a thriving ecosystem. Native plants, open fields, and a pond contribute to a balanced, sustainable environment. One acre is covered by a state-of-the-art retractable Cravo system, allowing our plants to soak up the benefits of natural sunlight while staying protected from harsh weather. So, when you choose our outdoor-grown cannabis, you’re getting more than just a premium product—you’re experiencing the direct result of meticulous care, innovation, and a deep commitment to quality.

2020: Our First Clean Green Certification

In 2020, we became the first organically managed farm in Maryland to achieve the highly coveted Clean Green Certification. This certification is reserved for top cannabis processors that meet several strict requirements in three key areas: legal compliance, cultivation methods, and an agricultural inspection. We dig more into the process in this blog.

At CULTA, we care about producing high-quality cannabis that doesn’t contain toxic chemicals and is grown ethically and sustainably. We’re proud to say that we’re approaching five years as a Clean Green Certified company, and all of our outdoor cannabis is certified Clean Green.

2021: Launching Our Tissue Culture Lab

In May 2021, after two years of intense planning, we announced the launch of our tissue culture lab program, which enables cultivators to reduce costs and improve the quality of cannabis with consistent, disease-free, scalable cannabis clones. This program allows cultivators to store all their genetics in a very small area, meaning we can rotate strains in and out of production without having to worry about creating space to house and maintain large mother plants.

At CULTA, we’re constantly looking for ways to innovate and take our genetics to the next level. By culturing and storing all our genetics in a lab we’ll be able to preserve CULTA’s standout strains and can continue providing our customers with the top-tier cannabis they’re used to. 2023: Expanding Our Indoor Grow Technology

Our indoor facility started as a modest operation and has since expanded into one of the most advanced cultivation centers in Maryland. Our enhanced technology allows us to experiment with different growing techniques, optimize plant health, and ensure that every harvest meets our rigorous standards. Our facility includes cutting-edge technology like advanced climate control systems that allow us to ensure optimal temperature, humidity, and airflow for plant health, LED and HPS lighting that help us balance energy efficiency with high-yield results, and using recaptured water to minimize waste.

In 2023, we began experimenting with Grow Light Design’s “Surround LED” intercanopy lighting system and, per our Senior Director of Cultivation, Jay Bouton, the “results were nothing short of exceptional.” We saw an average production increase of 26% across three harvest cycles with only a 10% increase in labor during that same time period.

2025: CULTA-Bred Genetics

In 2025, CULTA launched its first in-house breeding project. Inspired by the desire to breed the most-loved genetics from the past and present to create new, unique hybrids with targeted flavor and cannabinoid profiles, these genetics are a great way for customers to get their hands on premium, limited-edition strains.
