Dabbing 101: A Beginner’s Guide to Dabbing

Dabbing has become one of the most popular and effective ways to consume cannabis, delivering a highly potent and fast-acting experience. However, for those new to dabbing, the process can seem a bit overwhelming, especially with all the specialized equipment and complex terminology involved. If you’ve ever been curious about dabbing but weren’t sure where to start, we’ll break down everything you need to know—from understanding the essential tools to mastering the perfect technique for a smooth, flavorful dab.

What is dabbing?

Dabbing is the act of inhaling small, concentrated doses of cannabis extracts, such as oil, resin, or shatter, typically through a specialized device called a dab rig. This method involves heating a surface—usually a quartz or titanium nail—then applying the concentrate and inhaling it once it’s vaporized. Unlike smoking flower, dabbing produces less smoke and delivers a significantly higher THC concentration, making it a preferred choice for experienced users. However, its strength can be a double-edged sword, depending on your tolerance and desired effects.

What you’ll need to dab

Before we can walk you through how to dab, you’ll need to make sure you have the proper equipment. Here’s what you’ll need before you can dab along with a short description of each item and its intended purpose:

  • Dab rig- A specialized water pipe that’s used for smoking cannabis concentrates. Similar to a bong, a dab rig provides optimal airflow for vaporizing cannabis concentrates, like rosin, hash, or wax.
  • Nail or banger- Nails and bangers are what’s heated up with a torch to produce the vapor. Dab nails are known for their durability and quick heating time, while bangers provide a smoother, more controlled experience with better heat retention and flavor.
  • Torch- A heat source that’s used to heat the nail of a dab rig to high temperatures.
  • Carb cap- A small accessory used in dabbing to regulate airflow and control the temperature of the concentrate while it’s being vaporized.
  • Dab tool- A small, handheld instrument used to handle and apply cannabis concentrates onto a heated nail or banger when dabbing.
  • E-rigs- An electronic version of the standard dab rig, which uses battery-powered elements to vaporize concentrates, eliminating the need for a torch.

In addition to high-quality cannabis concentrates, CULTA also sells a variety of cannabis accessories, including those you’ll need for dabbing. Head into one of our dispensaries and one of our helpful budtenders can even help guide you through the dabbing process in-person. Dabbing might be intimidating, but we’re not!

Step-by-step guide to dabbing

Now that you have the proper equipment, we’ll walk you through how to dab.

Step 1- Prepare your dab rig

If your dab rig is clean and ready to go, fill the rig’s chamber with just enough water to allow for smooth filtration. This can be tricky to achieve, especially by newbies, so you can test the water level by inhaling through the mouthpiece before heating the nail. If the water bubbles without splashing into your mouth, you’ve hit the sweet spot.

Step 2- Heat the nail

Use the torch to evenly apply heat to the banger (or nail) until it glows red hot. This usually takes 30-60 seconds. Let the nail cool for 30-45 seconds before moving onto step 3. If you really want to get technical, let it cool down to between 350–450°F. Anything hotter can sacrifice taste.

Step 3- Apply the concentrate

Use the dab tool to pick up a small amount of concentrate. Since cannabis concentrate is incredibly potent, always start with the smallest amount possible. Place it inside the heated banger, making sure to rotate the tool to ensure even distribution. The heat will quickly vaporize the concentrate.

Step 4- Cap and inhale

Immediately after applying the concentrate, place a carb cap over the banger. This will trap the heat and regulate the airflow, ensuring thorough vaporization and smoother hits. While keeping the cap in place, steadily inhale through the rig’s mouthpiece.

Step 5- Exhale and finish up

Exhale slowly and savor the effects. The dab will typically “kick in” within a few seconds to a minute. Depending on the strain and temperature, you may experience different effects. (i.e., it might be less intense but last longer, or taste different but be more intense.)

Tips & things to keep in mind

Now that you know the basics, here are some things to avoid and keep in mind as you venture into dabbing:

  • Make sure to clean your dab rig completely after each use. This helps maintain flavor and performance. After each session, use a cotton swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol to wipe out any leftover residue from the banger.
  • Invest in a high-quality dab rig, nail, and dab tool to ensure a consistent and safe dabbing experience. Not all dab rigs and accessories are created equal, and our knowledgeable budtenders can help you get your hands on the very best.
  • ALWAYS start with small dabs to evaluate potency before moving onto bigger dabs. Dabs are highly concentrated and significantly more potent than flower and other types of cannabis. Taking too big of a dab right away can be overwhelming
  • Dabbing can cause dry mouth and dehydration, so drink plenty of water before and after your sessions. Keeping a bottle of water nearby ensures you stay comfortable and hydrated throughout your session, making for a smoother experience.
  • Be careful to avoid overheating the nail, as this can cause a foul tasting, harsh hit. Allow the nail to cool for 30-45 seconds after torching it; to make temperature control easier, you can invest in a temperature-controlled e-nail or an infrared thermometer.
  • Finally, make sure to avoid using low-quality or untested concentrates. These may contain residual solvents, pesticides, and other contaminants that can be harmful if they enter your system. Always purchase from a reputable and trusted dispensary and ask if they have a certificate of analysis available.
